With Floyd Mayweather officially retired from the sport of boxing, the sport’s biggest possible matchup of 2018 was the rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.
Now, it appears that this fight is in serious jeopardy.
Canelo Alvarez was under voluntary drug testing when he failed for trace levels of a steroid that is banned from competition.
The fighter and his management has been confident the fight will go on as planned, but once Nevada got their hands on the case, they issued a temporary suspension.
Earlier today, it was revealed that the MGM, the fight’s host venue, was issuing refunds to fight fans, another strong indicator that the bout is likely due to get cancelled.
Now, according to the Los Angeles Times, Nevada has issued a serious complaint on Canelo Alvarez, and will be seeking a 12 month suspension.
Here’s the L.A. Times’ initial report:
Nevada’s formal complaint against @Canelo states he “is guilty of foul or unsportsmanlike conduct that was detrimental to a contest,” by ingesting Clenbuterol.
