Following a hectic string of events, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway and undefeated UFC lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov are now set to fight for the lightweight title. To bring a new layer of intrigue to the scenario, a video of the two fighters training together ahead of the bout has made its way onto the internet.
UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov were initially set to fight in the headliner for the incipient fight card of UFC 223. With reigning UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor having been inactive for nearly two years, the UFC decided that “Notorious” would be stripped of his title and the UFC 223 main event would be a battle for the belt instead.
However, Ferguson tripped over a cable at a recent media event and tore his LCL. Just six days away from the fight, Ferguson was pulled from the event. This has made for the fourth time Nurmagomedov and “El Cucuy” have been scheduled to fight and then disappointingly cancelled.
Max Holloway stepped up on just six days notice to fill Ferguson’s spot, meaning the fighter has just days to move up to the lightweight division. Now it would appear that the UFC has decided to pin Holloway and Nurmagomedov into the same gym, as the fighters can be seen running on treadmills a short distance apart from each other within the video above.
UFC 223 will be featured live on pay-per-view. The event will take place inside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
