Phil Brooks, better known by his WWE moniker CM Punk, is set to make his big octagon return. With that in mind, the fighter’s upcoming opponent has come forward with his reasoning as to why he does not refer to Brooks by his famous professional wrestling title.
Brooks made his mixed martial arts debut inside the octagon. Facing off against Mickey Gall, the professional wrestler turned fighter suffered a swift defeat that sent Brooks back to the proverbial drawing boards for nearly two years.
Now Brooks is set to face off against Mike Jackson, another fighter to lose their octagon debut to Mickey Gall. The two mixed martial artists will face off at UFC 225.
The highly anticipated fight card will take place June 9 inside the United Center in Brooks’ hometown of Chicago, Illinois. UFC 225 will be featured live on pay-per-view.
Speaking on The MMA Hour, Jackson revealed why he doesn’t call Brooks by his WWE moniker.
“His mama call him Phil, I’m gonna call him Phil.”
“That’s his name — Phil Brooks. The whole CM Punk thing, I guess he’s trying to bring that gimmick over from the professional wrestling. Look, the CM Punk guy, he’s dying June 9 at UFC 225 in his hometown of Chicago.”
