UFC welterweight Colby Covington has become a character of controversy within the world of mixed martial arts as of late. Now it would appear that the fighter has obtained an armed security detail for his next UFC appearance.
Colby Covington first drew the ire of many fighters and fans alike back at UFC Sao Paulo in 2017. In his post-fight interview, having just defeated Brazil’s own Demian Maia, Covington called Brazil a “dump” and the arena crowd “filthy animals.”
Since then, the fighter has been on a trash-talking campaign against any competitors he deems fit. Now the fighter is set to face former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos for the UFC interim welterweight title at UFC 225.
The two mixed martial artists were initially set to face off in Brazil, but the fight has since been moved to the “Windy City.” While the reason for the move was never made official, it would appear that the growing number of irritated Brazilian fans concerning Colby Covington may have had an effect.
Speaking to MMA Junkie, Covington revealed that he now has an armed security detail.
“We’ve already taken those measures. Luckily, my agent, Dan Lambert, has all the money in the world. He’s already hired a full security guard team, (and) whenever I go to events or anything related to the UFC, I will have armed security guards with me.”
UFC 225 goes down June 9 inside the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. The event will be featured live on pay-per-view.
