UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson is not having a great couple days at the moment. Now the fighter has come forward with a statement concerning the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s recent decision to strip him of his title.
“El Cucuy” was set to face off against tough division contender Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223. The highly anticipated title fight has since been cancelled. Six days ahead of the battle for the undisputed title, Ferguson tore his LCL after tripping over a cable during a media event.
With Ferguson having been pulled from the match up, Nurmagomedov is now set to take on UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway for the UFC lightweight title in the main event of UFC 223. The event will take place April 7 inside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
It has since been reported that the UFC plans on stripping interim champion Tony Ferguson and reigning, yet inactive, title holder Conor McGregor of their belts once the first punch of UFC 223’s main event is thrown.
Speaking on the latest edition of The MMA Hour, Tony Ferguson revealed that the UFC has said nothing to him concerning the decision to strip him of his title. The fighter does not feel he should be stripped for a freak accident that occurred during a UFC-obligated media event.
