Undefeated UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov competed a lifelong dream over the weekend. The fighter earned the UFC lightweight title after putting on a dominant display at UFC 223. That being said, “The Eagle” only defeated a single top ten contender on his route to the belt.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) initially decided to strip UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor of his title as soon as the main event of UFC 223 began. For the headliner, interim champion Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov would battle it out for the undisputed title.
Following a series of injuries and weight cut complications, Nurmagomedov was ultimately faced with Al Iaquinta as his opponent at UFC 223. The UFC decided to strip Ferguson as well to allow Nurmagomedov the ability to fight for the undisputed belt, despite Iaquinta’s lack of title or top ten ranking.
Leading up to the fight, Nurmagomedov has only defeated a single fighter on the top ten list. The competitor earned a unanimous decision victory over Edson Barboza. Sitll, Nurmagomedov put on a dominant performance over Iaquinta for a title earning unanimous decision victory.
