UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway will look to make UFC history as he faced off against Khabib Nurmagomedov for the undisputed UFC lightweight title at UFC 223 over the weekend. Now the champion has come forward with a statement concerning the short notice match up.
UFC 223 goes down this Saturday, April 7, and was initially set to see Tony Ferguson take on Khabib Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title. However, Ferguson has since pulled out of the fight due to an injury.
On just six days notice, Max Holloway accepted the offer to take Ferguson’s place and fight Nurmagomedov for the title. Speaking to KHON2, Holloway revealed that this kind of opportunity does not come around too often.
“My manager called me. He told me that Tony is hurt and they want you and Khabib. So I was like, how do you turn down an opportunity like this? Opportunities like this come once in a lifetime. Really only one guy was able to do it. So glad to be the second guy and go out there and make history.”
