UFC superstar Conor McGregor was apparently in New York for more than just retaliation. It would appear that the UFC lightweight champion was originally also visiting to discuss the next steps of his UFC future.
“Notorious” made headlines when he decided to pay a surprise visit to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Thursday night, April 5. The fighter, along with a large entourage, allegedly attacked a bus filled with UFC fighters set to compete at UFC 223 backstage of the center.
McGregor was reportedly upset with Khabib Nurmagomedov, following the fighter’s recent confrontation with SBG Ireland’s Artem Lobov. Several individuals were injured in Thursday’s attack, leading to multiple fighters being pulled from their UFC 223 bouts.
Conor McGregor would go on to turn himself in to police and is now facing charges of assault and a felony charge of criminal mischief. However, it would appear that McGregor was initially in New York for another reason that Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Speaking to EPSN, UFC President Dana White revealed that Conor McGregor was initially set to finalize a new contract with the UFC. The fighter was being targeted for an interim title fight against Rafael dos Anjos for the welterweight belt.
However, the fighter’s offer has since been put on ice. McGregor is due back in court June 14.
