The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has put another exciting night of fights in the books. This time around, the mixed martial arts promotion took to Brooklyn, New York to host the highly anticipated fight card of UFC 223.
The night’s headliner was initially set to feature Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov fighting for the undisputed UFC lightweight title. However, Ferguson was pulled from the fight on just six days notice following an injury.
Nurmagomedov and Ferguson have now been scheduled the fight and ultimately cancelled a total of four times. “The Eagle” would then be matched up against UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway. UFC President Dana White also revealed that Ferguson would be stripped of his interim title in order to allow Nurmagomedov to compete for the undisputed belt.
However, Holloway was pulled from the title fight just a day before the event after being deemed unfit to finish his weight cut. On severely short notice, Al Iaquinta accepted to take on Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 223.
Nurmagomedov went on to put a dominant performance over his opponent, earning a unanimous decision victory over the fighter and becoming the new undisputed UFC lightweight champion. However, Ferguson was not terribly happy with being stripped of his interim title for the performance.
