The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil over the weekend to host the promotion’s latest fight card. While the night featured a series of exciting match ups, the event did not go without its controversy.
The world’s most famous mixed martial arts promotion was inside the Jeunesse Arena on Saturday, May 12, to host the highly anticipated fight card of UFC 224. Featured in the night’s live pay-per-view event headliner for fight fans worldwide, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes went toe-to-toe with rising challenger Raquel Pennington.
Pennington ultimately suffered a tough TKO loss to her opponent within the final round, after Nunes put on a dominant performance over the fighter. In between the fourth and final round, Pennington informed her corner that she was “done.”
However, the fighter’s cornermen convinced her to fight for the final round of the title match. Pennington would go on to suffer a brutal stoppage loss.
Speaking in the UFC 224 Post-Fight Press Conference, Nunes offered her thoughts on the matter.
“It’s sad. I didn’t even know, Nina [Ansaroff] told me in the locker room. It’s sad because you could avoid something. She went to the hospital and it might be a bad injury for her to go to the hospital. I already asked Nina to text her and find out if she needs anything, I’m here. It’s sad. If she didn’t have right conditioning to fight, then the coach should have thrown in the towel for sure. I think my coach wouldn’t let me go through that.
“I think she really needs to surround herself with the people who want the best for her so she can evolve in her next fights. Unfortunately tonight he failed.”
