Bellator MMA is currently hosting a heavyweight tournament grand prix to determine the division’s champion. Now it would appear that the promotion has a similar idea in mind for the welterweight division.
As reported by the LA Times, Bellator MMA is now preparing to host an eight-man welterweight tournament on Sept. 29. The event will take place from within the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif.
As reported by MMA Junkie, Bellator President Scott Coker has since come forward to reveal that “no fighters have been invited to participate yet.”
However, the LA Times reported that likely competitors for the tournament will include Paul Daley, Michael Page, Douglas Lima and Andrey Koreshkov. Beyond that, Bellator welterweight champion Rory MacDonald is expected to compete on the night’s card, but not within the tournament.
Rather, MacDonald will face Bellator middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi before reportedly joining the tournament in 2019.
