UFC 225 went down on June 9, featuring a non-title between reigning UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker and former opponent Yoel Romero. After missing weight for the event, Romero was no longer eligible to compete for the title.
Consequently, the night’s headliner became a non-title fight. However, it would appear that fellow contender Kelvin Gastelum may have missed a chance to fight for the title himself.
Speaking at the UFC 225 Post-Fight Press Conference, UFC President Dana White revealed that Kelvin Gastelum was set to be the replacement opponent for the night’s event, in case anything came up. However, the fighter was seemingly unable to step up to the proverbial late.
“He should have been the backup here tonight when this all went down,” White said. “He couldn’t do it. He’s got some personal issues that he seriously needs to take care of.
“Some s–t that he needs to get together and handle quick.”
