Former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping called an end to his career last week. Holding the record for the most wins inside the octagon, “The Count” finished his career in the sport as a legend.
Speaking on the latest edition of The MMA Hour, Michael Bisping revealed that what pushed him to announce his retirement was the hit film Journeyman, as story focused on a boxer suffering from brain damage.
“It wasn’t planned to retire, sort of speak. But, I flew into New York last Sunday. While on the play, I watched a movie called Journeyman.
“Now I knew my retirement was close and it was something I contemplated very closely for a while. I had given a lot of thought to it. I knew I was going to be retiring, but for some reason I wasn’t telling the UFC because you want to keep that door open.
“Fighting has been my security blanket for a long time. Anytime you need a bit of money, you just take a fight. Once that door is closed, it’s closed. So, I was keeping it open. But, I watched a movie called the Journeyman with Paddy Considine last Sunday on the plane.
“It’s about a boxer who suffers a traumatic brain injury in a fight and…it’s a very, very sad story. It just made me realize that now is the time.”
