Colby Covington earned the interim UFC welterweight title back at UFC 225 with a unanimous decision victory over Rafael dos Anjos. That being said, Covington has since been pushed to the side to make room for another title fight all together.
Colby Covington recently revealed that he can not fight until later this year. Rather than book the interim champion against reigning title holder Tyron Woodley later this year, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has elected to lock down Woodley for a fight against Darren Till at UFC 228 on Sept. 8.
Darren Till, a fighter that missed weight in his latest bout, is being granted a title shot over the interim champion. Beyond that, it has been revealed that Colby Covington will have his interim title stripped the moment Till and Woodley’s fight begins.
Speaking on ESPN’s Ariel & The Bad Guy, journalist Ariel Helwani has come forward with his thoughts on the matter. Helwani called the decision “short sighted” and “hot shot booking.”
UFC President Dana White and Ariel Helwani have a history of not seeing eye-to-eye. However, it would appear that the journalist is quite unhappy with the UFC head’s latest decision.
