Mixed martial arts promotion Bellator MMA is currently deep into a heavyweight tournament grand prix dedicated to determining the division’s champion. While the two semi-final match ups may not appear on the same card, the fights may go down within hours of each other.
Heavyweight legend Fedor Emelianenko is currently set to throw down with former UFC competitor Chael Sonnen in one of the grand prix’s semi-finals. Meanwhile, reigning light heavyweight champion Ryan Bader will be taking on Matt Mitrione in a battle to make it to the finals. Both fights are now being targeted for October, though dates and venues have yet to be officially announced.
Speaking to MMA Junkie, Bellator MMA President Scott Coker revealed that the two fights will not take place on the same card. However, back-to-back nights of fights may be a possibility.
“We’re trying to keep it in close proximity. I want both of the semifinals to happen close together.”
