Trouble makers on fight week tried to rattle Team Alpha Male’s Cody Garbrandt this week, by bringing up some old tweets that they tried to spin as controversial.
Of course, the dated tweets were not controversial in nature at all, and the strategy to rattle Garbrandt did not work. Now UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis has come forward with a statement over the matter.
Cody Garbrandt is currently gearing up to face off against reigning UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw in a rematch main event for UFC 227 on Saturday. Meanwhile, a series of old tweets from “No Love” have resurfaced.
“It’s lyrics,” Garbrandt told MMA Junkie. “I grew up hanging out with blacks, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, selling drugs. That’s a street word we would always say. It wasn’t like I was using derogatory words toward anyone. That’s how we grew up. It was kind of normal. That’s it. It’s a learning experience for a lot of people to not use that word in this day an age.”
