Undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is currently set to throw down with UFC megastar and former two-division champion Conor McGregor. With that in mind, Nurmagomedov’s head coach seemingly does not believe the champion can stand and trade with the talented knockout artist.
Nurmagomedov and McGregor are set to headline UFC 229 on Oct. 6. The event will take place live on pay-per-view from within the illustrious T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
Speaking on the Eurobash Podcast, American Kickboxing Academy head coach Javier Mendez offered his thoughts on prepare his fighter and Sambo specialist Khabib Nurmagomedov for the striking of Conor McGregor.
“To me [Conor McGregor] is the best standup guy in the whole UFC, in my opinion. There’s no amount of time that we have that’s going to help us to try and get him to stand up, there’s no way possible. So, I’m not gonna say, ‘Oh yeah, we’re gonna get him ready’… come on…wake up…it ain’t gonna work. I want nothing to do with Conor’s stand-up…he’s too good.”
