While many are figuratively leaping at the opportunity to see a hype-drunken cross-promotional bout between boxing legend Floyd Mayweather and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, don’t count UFC welterweight Stephen Thompson among them.
The No. 1 contender “Wonderboy” is tired of hearing about Mayweather vs. McGregor, or so he told TMZ Sports.
In a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Thompson admitted “I think it should be about our sport, not boxing. Where is boxing going nowadays? That’s why they’re doing fights like this, because boxing is going nowhere.”
Thompson also mentioned that he thinks the two sports are transitioning into something similar to WWE.
“It’s going towards that WWE type mentality of just getting the bigger fights.” Thompson said. “It just seems like a show to me.”
While Thompson seems mighty disinterested in boxing, the welterweight is going to have his hands full with the UFC this weekend. Steven Thompson is set to face welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in the main event title fight rematch for UFC 209 in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
