It would appear that UFC superstar Conor McGregor is asking for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to implement a new weight class for his octagon return.
“Notorious” has competed across the board within the UFC. Initially a featherweight, the fighter would eventually find himself in the UFC’s lightweight division. Of course, McGregor has also competed against Nate Diaz within the welterweight class.
All in all, McGregor has competed at 145, 155 and 170 pounds inside the octagon. With no 165 pound division currently in place under the mixed martial arts promotion, “Notorious” is now asking for the weight class to be created.
Taking to Twitter, MMA manager Ali Abdelaziz revealed that McGregor has been in talks with the UFC concerning the implementation of a 165 pound weight class.
“When conor called the ufc he asked them create a 165lb belt. He thinks @danawhite was born yesterday. This is fact. Waiting for response Mr. Helwani. #BeefIsReal”

The last male division to be added by the UFC was the flyweight division, now reigned over by champion Demetrious Johnson. The weight class was opened with a tournament, though that has not always been the case with new divisions.
In its earliest stages, the UFC did not even have weight classes. The Octagon welcomed any and all competitors to fight for their place as champion.
The promotion then added a series of divisions, from a 265 pound heavyweight class to 170 pounds at welterweight. With the introduction of unified rules within the promotion, another wave of weight classes followed.
From the male lightweight division down to the most recent introduction of the women’s featherweight and flyweight classes, the UFC now hosts a grand total of 12 different weight division.
With that in mind, “Notorious” is now looking to start a title fight in a new weight class. Frankie Edgar appeared on the most recent edition of The MMA Hour to offer his thoughts on the matter.
Speaking to MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, Edgar stated:
“I mean, come on, there is no 165-pound belt. You know what I’m saying? I want to fight on the moon. You know what I mean? Come on.
“He doesn’t want to defend his own belt. What, he wants to fight me? I mean, hey, that’d be great. That’d be great for me. Let’s be real. I’m not scared to fight anybody. Come on, I’ve been doing too long to be scared to fight anybody. I mean, if anything, that would be very good for me, to fight Conor McGregor.
“I would’ve fought him in any weight class, to be honest with you.
“I think if it was real, Dana would’ve called me personally. He’s done before. With something like that, Dana would’ve called me personally, and he didn’t, so I have to think that it wasn’t real.”
