UFC middleweight Anthony Smith has been quite vocal about his interest in fighting on the UFC Fight Night 135 card in his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska. The mixed martial artist has even revealed that he is willing to move up to heavyweight to fight on the card.
That being said, ESPN’s Brett Okamoto is now reporting that Anthony Smith is being targeted as the replacement opponent for former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua’s next bout.
Rua was initially set to face off against Volkan Oezdemir. However, Oezdemir has since pulled out of the fight in order to face Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 227.
Now Smith is being reportedly targeted as the replacement opponent to take on Rua on July 22 in Hamburg, Germany.
