UFC women’s strawweight Jessica Andrade co-headlined UFC 228 over the weekend after Nicco Montano vs. Valentina Shevchenko was cancelled. That being said, Andrade attempted to save the title fight last minute.
UFC women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano was initially set to defend her title from Valentina Shevchenko in the co-main event of UFC 228 on Saturday, Sept. 8. However, on just one day’s notice, Montano was pulled from the fight after being rushed to the hospital for kidney issues caused by her weight cut.
After the fight was cancelled, Andrade’s bout against Karolina Kowalkiewicz was moved to the night’s co-main event. Speaking to MMA Fighting, Jessica Andrade revealed that she was willing to take on Valentina Shevchenko for the title on just one day’s notice.
“I even offered to fight for the belt if they agreed to, but since they had already weighed me and done all the work, I wasn’t allowed by the athletic commission. But I’m happy I was able to help the promotion, help the UFC with a great show and excite people.”
“I think that’s my job, to go in there and excite everyone who’s watching. To give my best and knock people out, and that’s what I did tonight.”
