UFC megastar Conor McGregor mad his big octagon return at UFC 229 on Saturday, Oct. 6. “Notorious” faced off against undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov for the fight, getting dropped early in the bout by a right hand before being ultimately submitted by the Dagestan native in the fourth round.
Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh has since come forward to reveal that he believes the right hand Khabib Nurmagomedov landed on Conor McGregor was perhaps one of the more substantial shots ever landed on “Notorious.”
“He (Conor) hates technical mistakes. So that right hand, you know… he was very disappointed he got caught with a shot like that. But it is actually funny, I was just thinking about this, you know that right hand, if you showed it to a boxing coach he would say ‘That’s horrible. Your head is down and you’re swinging’. But again, I don’t really care about peoples opinions on things. I just care about the strikes effectiveness. It was a damn effective technique. You know it’s one of the hardest clean shots Conor has been caught with in his MMA career.”
