Another mixed martial arts event is now in the books for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). UFC 211 went down Saturday night inside the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. However, the night did not end without its controversy.
In a lightweight bout, former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez was set to face Dustin Poirier. The bout began well, with both fighters giving their all. However, things came to an end in the second round.
In the second round, Alvarez struck his opponent with knees to the head. Many of those spectating the bout believed the strikes to be illegal blows to a downed opponent. The fight was brought to a halt, as Poirier was deemed unable to continue after the strikes.
However, the fight was officially decided as a no contest. Dustin Poirier believes it should have been a victory for him by means of disqualification. Now the fighter has come forward with his thoughts.
In a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Poirier explained that he wants a rematch with the former champion. Poirier is also appealing the decision. “I earned that money for my family. my daughter’s college fund. I’m a prizefighter, and somebody made a call and took away the opportunity for me to make my money.” Poirier told MMA Junkie.
