And Another One … UFC Fighter Gets Popped By USADA, Suspended 12 Months

Former UFC bantamweight Carls John de Tomas has been dealt a 12 month suspension for his drug test failure. The mixed martial artist was initially set to compete at UFC Fight Night 123. However, the fighter was pulled from the match up after being flagged by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for a failed drug test. USADA has now revealed that Tomas tested positive for furosemide, the 21-year-old competitor has since been released from his UFC contract. Tomas' one year suspension is retroactive to the date of his flagged test, Dec. 29. Carls John de Tomas competed inside the octagon twice before being let go by the promotion. Tomas suffered a loss in each of his octagon performances. The fighter is now 6-2 in his mixed martial arts career. Here's the official USADA release: USADA announced today that UFC® athlete Carls John de Tomas, of Quezon City, Philippines, has tested positive for a prohibited substance and accepted the standard one-year sanction for his anti-doping policy violation. De Tomas, 21, tested positive for furosemide, stemming from a urine sample he provided during the in-competition period on December 8, 2017, before his bout at the UFC Fight Night event in Fresno, Calif. Furosemide is a Specified Substance in the class of Diuretics and Masking Agents and prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, which has adopted the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List. De Tomas’ one-year period of ineligibility began on December 29, 2017, the date his provisional suspension was imposed. The athlete’s positive test also falls under the jurisdiction of the California State Athletic Commission, which has also sanctioned De Tomas with a one-year suspension and a $2,500 fine. Pursuant to the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, all UFC athletes serving a period of ineligibility for an anti-doping policy violation are required to continue to make themselves available for testing in order to receive credit for time completed under their sanction.
