Bec Rawlings Openly Discusses Cause Of Missed Weight, Calls For Change

UFC strawweight star "Rowdy" Bec Rawlings.

“Rowdy” Bec Rawings fights Tecia Torres in a key women’s strawweight bout at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 104. Unfortunately, Rawlings suffered a little bit of a setback as she missed weight for the fight, coming at 117.5 pounds. The limit for a non-title fight is 116 pounds.

The fiery Australian took to Facebook earlier Friday to explain what happened.

“Earlier this year I was finally diagnosed with Secondary Hypothyroidism after struggling with my weight & energy for so long & to add to that my hormones, cortisol & everything that fires this beast of a body has taken a hit from these nasty weight cuts to 115.. today I pushed my body to it’s absolute limits to try hit 116 & my body failed me.. I know people don’t exactly know what cutting weight entales & are quick to judge & talk shit but I know I did everything in my power to make weight today. I’ve been calling for 125 for this reason, women’s bodies are not designed to cut extreme amounts of weight & I am not the only UFC fighter with these issues, we need more divisions.

I’m still fighting, Tecia & her team ATT were very understanding & knew I couldn’t cut anymore & just want a good fight tomorrow night which we will give.

Can’t wait to fight & put on a show for the Houston Fans & everyone tuning in to see me fight.”

As of right now, the UFC doesn’t have a women’s flyweight division even though many fighters at 115 pounds and women’s bantamweight have to choose one weight class or the other even though they would be better suited for 125 pounds.

UFC Fight Night 104 takes place on Saturday night from the Toyota Center in Houston. The main event of the fight features Chan Sung Jung against Dennis Bermudez in featherweight action.
