Calvillo Delivers On Hype, Dominates, Finishes, Then Drops Famous Nate Diaz Line

Cynthia Calvillo and Pearl Gonzalez underwent a wild “UFC 210” eve as there was concern the fight would be scrapped due to the fact that New York prohibits fighters from entering the octagon with breast implants, which Gonzalez has. Eventually, the bout was ruled a “go” and Calvillo could not wait to get down to the octagon to put on a show for the crowd in Buffalo, New York. Gonzalez was calm in her corner before the fight, but it was obvious Calvillo had the crowd on her side.

Calvillo proved the reach difference would not be an issue, as she was connecting with her combinations early on in the fight. Pearl was hesitant and could not find a nice range to strike from, but being so far away from Calvillo let her react in time to dodge most strikes.

Calvillo was able to find her way through the defense of Pearl, cracking her with uppercuts while she tried to dodge other blows. Calvillo engaged in the clinch to work for a takedown, but Gonzalez was able to escape and they reset the action in the middle of the octagon. Calvillo cracked Pearl with a combination, and Pearl reacted by trying to take the fight to the canvas.

Calvillo locked in an Anaconda Choke with a minute remaining in the fight, but Pearl remained active and escaped when Calvillo ultimately let up on the hold. Pearl secured a takedown but Calvillo took her back in no time; Calvillo locked in a triangle choke but Gonzalez was saved by the bell.

Calvillo kept the same pace in the second, but Pearl seemed more aggressive to start things out. She slowed down drastically less than a minute into the fight and had her hands hanging low with her mouth agape. Pearl took Calvillo down to the mat and actually transitioned into an armbar attempt, ultimately pulling out and finding her way on top.

Calvillo took the back of Pearl and threatened a rear-naked choke. Pearl, with two minutes left on the clock, was patient with her defense. The body triangle of Calvillo prevented Pearl from spinning out of the hold like she tried to; Calvillo cranked the hold with her forearm over the face of Pearl. Pearl spun her way out, but gave Calvillo the full mount. It wasn’t long before Pearl spun out again, giving Calvillo her back. The second round would end with Calvillo dominant, controlling almost every aspect of the fight once it went to the mat.

Pearl knew she had to take Calvillo out in order to win, and just like she did in the second she was the aggressor to kick things off. Calvillo’s pace did not slow down, however, and it wasn’t long before Pearl’s arms were hanging low. Calvillo landed a trip takedown and dove directly into half guard. A brief scramble saw Calvillo transition to full mount before eventually taking the back that was given to her.

Pearl was trapped in a body triangle, but she was trapped in the middle of the octagon with a rear naked choke crank. Pearl showed resilience when she escaped that hold, but Calvillo proved her superiority when she got another rear naked choke locked in.
