On Saturday night at UFC on Fox 23, Jorge Masvidal notched the biggest win of his career, stopping Donald Cerrone in the second round. Big wins usually mean bigger fights and the former street fighter appears to be headed down that road while also winning three consecutive fights.
During his appearance on the “UFC Unfiltered” podcast, Dana White said due to Nick Diaz turning down fights against former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and Demian Maia, Masvidal could be the one to benefit.
“If Nick doesn’t take it, I’ll give it to Masvidal,” White said on the podcast, but failed to say which fight he was alluding too.
Lawler hasn’t fought since he lost his title against Tyron Woodley at UFC 201 in July. White said Lawler accepted a rematch against Diaz in December until the former Strikeforce welterweight champ declined the fight. Diaz won the first fight, knocking out Lawler at UFC 47 in Aug. 2004.
Maia’s won six consecutive fights and last fought at UFC on Fox 21 in August when he submitted Carlos Condit in less than two minutes. White said when he offered Diaz a fight against Maia, he never heard back from him.
