It was announced on Monday, HBO Sports, WWE and the Bill Simmons Media Group will produce “Andre the Giant”, a documentary film examining the life and career of one of the most beloved legends in WWE history.
“For more than 20 years, Andre the Giant’s larger than life personality and unique charisma captured the imagination of fans around the world,” said WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon in a press release to MMA Imports. “I will always value our friendship, and am proud to tell the story of the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’.”
Simmons, who joined HBO in 2015 will be the executive producer of the documentary was the brains behind the ESPN hit series “30 for 30” is excited to live out a dream he’s wanted to do for a long time.
“Going back to 2007 and 2008 when I was creating and developing ‘30 for 30’ for ESPN, Andre’s story rode the top of every single sports documentary wish list I ever made,” said Simmons. “We always hear about unicorns these days – Andre was the ultimate unicorn. He’s a true legend. Everyone who ever crossed paths with him has an Andre story – and usually four or five. I’m delighted to join forces with Jason Hehir (Emmy-Award winning director and producer who will be the film’s director) and WWE so we can capture Andre’s amazing story once and for all.”
“Andre the Giant”, real name André René Roussimoff joined the WWE when it was known as the WWWF in 1973 under McMahon’s father, Vince Sr. where he was billed at seven-foot, four-inch and 500 pounds which made him the ultimate attraction since being that big was unheard of during that era.
He faced the likes of Killer Khan, Big John Studd but was most notable for his match against Hulk Hogan at Wrestlemania 3 in 1987 in front of 93,173 fans at the Pontiac Silverdome in Detriot, MI.
