While being overzealous during her fight last Saturday, women’s bantamweight Julianna Pena accidentally punched herself in the face.
In the main event of last Saturday’s UFC on FOX event, at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, Pena fought women’s bantamweight contender Valentina Shevchenko.
In the second round, Shevchenko submitted Pena with an armbar from the bottom.
Earlier in the fight, while Shevchenko was on top of Pena, it appears Pena punched herself in the face while trying to hit her opponent. Pena was trying to land punches from the bottom but missed Shevchenko’s head, and accidently brought the looping punch back to her own face.
This submission loss was Pena’s first loss in the UFC. She has four wins in the UFC, highlighted by decision wins over Jessica Eye and Cat Zingano.
Following her submission win, Shevchenko now has a strong claim to receive the next shot at UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes.
