With featherweight champion Jose Aldo and interim champion Max Holloway set to battle for the undisputed UFC featherweight title at UFC 212, the next contender at 145 pounds is up for grabs.
The next two contenders in the UFC featherweight rankings are former title challengers No. 3 ranked Ricardo Lamas and No. 2 ranked Frankie Edgar.
Edgar said recently on “The MMA Hour” he would like to face Lamas if he couldn’t face Holloway as the matchup makes the most sense. “The Bully” said the fight against Edgar was offered to him for last week’s UFC 208 but had to turn it down. Then Lamas heard the comments from Edgar on a recent edition of “The MMA Hour” when he said a fight with Lamas is one he would like. The Chicago couldn’t agree more with the former lightweight champion and has a time in mind for when he would like the fight to happen.
“I agree,” Lamas told MMA Imports. “He said that me and him are a fight that makes the most sense in our division. Holloway is fighting Aldo so me and Frankie would be the next best thing. I’m looking for fights that will get back in title contention and I think Frankie is that fight.
“I heard Frankie’s interview. He said he’s looking at kind of like mid-May. I’d be good with that. A fight with Frankie is the fight that we were looking for. They did offer us the fight for UFC 208 but timing just wasn’t right for me. I had some stuff going on in my life with my family that I wanted to attend too first before I leave town and do another training camp. We tried to negotiate on the date but that didn’t happen and Frankie ended up having a surgery that he needed. I know he’s looking to get back in there in May and I’m 100 percent down with that.”
Who would be down with a fight with “The Answer” and “The Bully”?
