Glover Teixeira, a former challenger to the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, was hoping to climb his way back up the ranks with a win over Jared Cannonier at “UFC 208” on Saturday evening. Cannonier, riding a two fight win streak, hoped to turn some heads with an impressive performance in the underdog role.
The majority of the opening round saw Teixeira control Cannonier on the canvas, but once the fight made its way back standing it was Cannonier who wobbled the former title challenger. Teixeira brought the fight right back to the canvas at the start of the second, working to transition but Cannonier’s guard was too tight. The referee stood the action up just moments after Teixeira stopped working, leaving most onlookers scratching their heads. Cannonier gained some momentum with his strikes after the bizarre halt in action, but all his momentum would get drained when Teixeira took the action seconds into the third.
An elbow from the bottom sliced Teixeira wide open and Cannonier looking to scramble to a better position allowed Teixeira to ultimately take his back. Teixeira couldn’t make anything of it as Cannonier found his way back to full guard where the fight would expire.
Glover Teixeira def. Jared Cannonier by way of Unanimous Decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-26)
