UFC Veteran Accused Of Assaulting Female Grappler

Life after the Ultimate Fighting Championship may be difficult for those mixed martial artists who didn’t have the opportunity to make a name for themselves in the world’s biggest promotion, but this is just downright terrible. On Friday, former UFC fighter Daniel Barrera was charged with misdemeanor assault for an alleged attack on a female high school wrestler at Pahoa High School in Hilo, Hawaii.

Barrera came up behind the girl as she was in a wrestler’s position on hands and knees, and hit her three times on the back which ended up causing pain and redness.

The former contestant on season seven of “The Ultimate Fighter” appeared in court on Monday and asked of he could be released from jail. Hilo District Judge Harry Freitas told the former fighter he would not.

“Am I being released?” Barrera asked.

“You are not,” Frietas said.

“What is the reason I cannot be released?” Barrera inquired.

“Because you have too much of a history,” Freitas replied.

Barrera has convictions on his record with two convictions each for disorderly conduct and harassment, with the latest conviction resulting in a 12-day jail sentence. When the former fighter was being escorted out of he courtroom by sheriff’s deputies, he decided to scream to his mother.

“I was just helping the wrestling<‘ Barrera screamed. “These kids need to wake up. I wanted them to wake up because Hawaiians need to toughen up. OK? I was at wrestling practice.”

“I hear you, Mr. Barrera,” Frietas said.

“I don’t understand how this is assault,” Barrera asserted. “You play football? Anybody? Am I (expletive) crazy here? There’s murderers on the street! My sister got murdered two weeks ago in Pahoa!”

Barrera is due back in court on Feb. 28.
