Top-ranked UFC welterweight Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson has thrown his hat into the proverbial ring of opponents looking to face Conor McGregor. Though Thomspon isn’t in it for the same reason as everyone else.
“Wonderboy” is set to face welterweight champion Tyron Woodley at UFC 209 in a spectacular main event rematch. Apparently, the fighter doesn’t have enough on his plate with UFC 209, because now he’s looking to other fights ahead.
In an interview with Fight Society podcast, Thompson explained why he is so interested in facing the lightweight champion.
“Yeah for me it is about fighting the best people in the world and proving to the world that I am the best fighter, not just to the world but to myself. I’ve been doing this since I was three years old and this is who I am. This is my life and I want to be the best. I do it for the honor and the glory and it’s not about that big paycheck. Everybody asks ‘would you fight Conor McGregor?’ Of course, I would fight Conor McGregor, but it’s not because of the money.” Thompson said.
The welterweight went on to explain that the martial prowess of “Notorious” is what really draws him into considering a bout with the champion.
“It’s because he’s such a huge martial artist. Everybody considers themselves the best if you fight Conor McGregor — if you beat Conor McGregor. You know? So I look at it like that.”
While McGregor’s next bout within the UFC, or otherwise, is yet to be determined, Stephan’s next step is pretty clear.
“Wonderboy” will be facing welterweight champion Tyron Woodley at UFC 209 on March 4 in the Las Vegas, Nevada T-Mobile Arena.
