Boxing Takes Lead In Ending Horrific Weight Cutting Practices In Combat Sports

The UFC has been plagued by a case of bad weight cuts and weight management complications as of late.

Most recently, lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov was forced out of the UFC 209 co-main event due to weight management issues. The fighter was rushed to the hospital following sharp pains during his weight cut.

Cutting weight for fights often requires competitors to dehydrate themselves to dangerous levels. Former UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre recently mentioned that he believes someone could die in the UFC, because of the stresses of weight cutting.

With the increasing health risks and potentially unnecessary damages being caused by weight cutting, many are looking for alternatives to the seemingly bad practice.

WBC boxing seems to be making one of the first steps, as they recently released a promo for their incipient bout between Gennady Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs to Instagram.

The promo features a checklist of 30 day and 7 day weigh ins, as well as a necessary MRI scan for each fighter.
