Yesterday, the UFC 209 card was dealt a very unfortunate blow.
Scheduled for tonight’s pay-per-view co-main event, undefeated Russian contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov proved his detractors right when he suddenly fell ill over a botched weight cut.
Instead of shedding the final pounds in the lead up to the UFC 209 weigh-ins, Khabib’s team took the fighter to the hospital after complications arised from the strenuous weight cut.
Taking to the UFC’s official broadcast partner at FOX, the UFC president gave a health update on his fighter:
“It’s never good,” White said. “If you’re doing it and things are going bad, it’s bad on your kidneys, it’s bad on your liver. It’s just bad all the way around. He’s doing better now. Obviously, he’s OK. He’s gonna be fine. But yeah. It’s never good.”
No word from the UFC on what the plans are for Khabib’s future. The Russian was literally one more win away from realizing a mega-fight against Conor McGregor. The missed weight is a massive setback, as the UFC doesn’t take kindly to any fighter who has a history of missed weights and cancelled fights.
