The status of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s middleweight division is up in the air right now as the middleweight champion, Michael Bisping, already has his next fight lined up against Georges St-Pierre. The issue? Neither Bisping or GSP have agreed on a date for the return fight, leaving the rest of the middleweight contenders with nothing to fight for in the meantime.
In a day and age where interim championship bouts are created so often, UFC President Dana White may want to consider the idea of pitting Luke Rockhold against Yoel Romero for the interim middleweight championship. Rockhold, the man Bisping defeated on two-weeks notice to win the belt, is hungry for gold and has stated he wants Romero for the interim gold. He told Fox Sports:
“If they want to put a real belt on the line, I’d gladly go fight Yoel for it. But I want security. If I’m going to go fight a top guy, I want to know that my next fight is the unified title and get that going. I’m not here to dance around. I’m here to fight for titles and fight for championship money.”
“He’s avoided “Jacare” [Souza] and he’s avoided Yoel Romero. He’s doing everything he can not to get those fights and they are forced them to pretty much offer these fights.”
“I’m so much better than Michael. If he ever mans up and I get the opportunity to fight him, I’ll show that. We’ll see. The way the division’s going, I don’t know.”
