“Thanks for the cheese.”
Conor McGregor shocked the world nearly one year ago when he took to social media to announce his retirement from mixed martial arts. The announcement caught fans, fighters, and Ultimate Fighting Championship officials off guard as Conor had just agreed to square off with Nate Diaz for a second time at “UFC 200”.
McGregor and White could not come to terms on exactly how many media obligations Conor would have to fulfill to properly promote his upcoming rematch with Diaz. White wanted him to do just as much as the rest of the card while McGregor wanted proper time to train for the fight.
Both were reasonable requests, but the two stubborn figures clashed and it resulted in Conor’s retirement. On April 19, 2017, McGregor took to his Twitter account and said, “I have decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheese. Catch ya’s later.”
The tweet shook the sports community to its core as it was all that ESPN, CBS Sports, and FOX Sports 1 talked about for the majority of the day. The tweet even got more attention than Kobe Bryant’s retirement tweet; Of course, Conor would come back to the sport to make history and bring us where we are today. Conor looked back on his retirement tweet and acknowledged its one year anniversary with the following tweet:
I'm thankful for the cheese.
