Last week, before Demetrious Johnson took center stage on FOX, the champ shocked the world by revealing he only has one UFC belt.
Traditionally, the UFC gives their champions a new belt for every single title defense, and despite D.J. just tying Anderson Silva’s defense record, the flyweight champ only had one belt.
That changed this past weekend though, with his early submission win over Wilson Reis “Mighty Mouse” got a new belt and reportedly got to keep it too.
Now he’s only owned 8 more.
The UFC boss originally stated that he did not owe “Mighty Mouse” any new hardware, but after Saturday’s amazing performance, it would appear as if the UFC boss has had a change of tune.
Check it out:
I’m going to get him his belts. He’s definitely keeping the belt from tonight, and I guess I’ve got some catching up to do. Listen, that’s not the way it works. People don’t win belts every time. You defend your title, and you keep your belt. If we’re handing out belts every single defense here – that’s a lot of money.
“It would be a lot of money to get him eight more belts. To be honest with you, we don’t even have eight more belts. We order them as we do events. It’s going to be a little bit of back up on his belts, but we’ll get it done.”
Here’s how D.J. got the bosses respect:
