Eddie Alvarez is one of the first and only fighters to make his way into the octagon from Bellator and prove that he truly is one of the best lightweights in the world. Alvarez left behind a fat contract and his Bellator Lightweight Championship in order to prove himself in the octagon.
Alvarez was welcomed to the octagon by Donald Cerrone before picking up his first win under the UFC banner after beating Gilbert Melendez. He would go on to dominate Anthony Pettis in a fight to earn his shot at the lightweight championship which was held by Rafael dos Anjos at the time.
dos Anjos looked to be one of the more dominant champions the lightweight division had seen at the time, manhandling Anthony Pettis to earn the belt before knocking Donald Cerrone out cold just over a minute into their championship fight. The bout between dos Anjos and Alvarez came to a head at UFC Fight Night: dos Anjos vs. Alvarez on July 7, 2016.
Alvarez brought the fight to dos Anjos who clearly looked outclassed in the contest; Alvarez pushed a pace that dos Anjos struggled to match and when he finally did, it was too little, too late for the champion. Watch how the final moments of their fight played out below:
