UFC President Dana White shocked the world when he revealed Georges St-Pierre would be coming back to the octagon to challenge for championship gold, without a tune-up fight. The fact that St-Pierre was returning to the octagon didn’t catch many by surprise, but White’s choice for his opponent did.
After years of absence, St-Pierre was going to challenge UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping to a shot at his championship. Despite having a handful of challengers already lined up for a shot at the title, St-Pierre was jumping over them to begin his journey to establish himself as the greatest fighter of all time.
In St-Pierre’s absence, the rise of Conor McGregor happened seemingly overnight and it wasn’t long before GSP was an afterthought to casual fans. While diehard fans remembered and always hoped for the Canadian’s return, UFC had a cash-cow in McGregor that casual fans could latch on to, whether it was to love or hate.
Now that St-Pierre is back, he is returning to solidify his legacy as the greatest of all time by hopefully becoming a three weight class champion. St-Pierre hinted towards it in a recent interview with MMA Fighting where he said:
“I walk around at 185, 190 pounds. I’m going to fight at 185 right now. I even know some guys who fight at 155 (who) walk around in the offseason at a bigger weight than I am. I can possibly fight in those three (155, 170, 185) divisions, but I’m back for one reason. I want to make history.”
