When Boxing’s P4P king started a public campaign to fight Conor McGregor in 2016, the MMA world reacted with little interest.
The thought of a UFC fighter crossing over to professional boxing is something we have never seen, and as such no one took the call out as credible or serious.
One man though, he was listening in on Floyd’s words, and plotting a mega-fight for the ages. That man was Conor McGregor.
Conor started to leverage his star power for the fight after he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to become the first ever two-division UFC champion in history.
With Conor on board and Floyd still on the hunt for a fight with the UFC star, it wasn’t long until UFC president Dana White injected himself into the equation. On Dana’s side, he’s publicly stated that he’s open to the contest, as it would mean a historic payday for McGregor and the UFC would not get in his way.
Months of rumors and back-and-forth banter has ensued ever since, and we have yet to hear of an actual fight taking place.
Maybe it’s because the fight is never going to happen in an earthly reality.
Taking to the official “Boxing” podcast, Showtime boxing president Stephen Espinoza, for the first time, shot down rumors of Mayweather vs. McGregor.
The Showtime Boxing boss stated that all this noise is nothing more than a publicity stunt by the UFC, and no one on their side is serious about making the contest.
He didn’t call the fight off entirely though. He did state that Showtime would promote the fight in 2017, but if terms could not be met for a fight this year, they’d call it off entirely.
