Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson went ten rounds with the UFC Welterweight Champion of the world and left empty handed both times. His first scrap with Tyron Woodley resulted in a draw, forcing company officials to give Thompson another shot at capturing the gold.
Both Woodley and “Wonderboy” were gun-shy in their second meeting at “UFC 209”, throwing only a fraction of the strikes they threw at “UFC 205” months before. Woodley managed to escape with the championship slung over his shoulder, leaving Thompson and his team to make their way back to the drawing boards.
The welterweight division is stacked beyond belief, but there seems to be a bit of a log jam when it comes to contenders. Robbie Lawler, Demian Maia, and Jorge Masivdal can all make the argument that they are just one fight away from earning another shot at the title but Thompson has his sights set on a bigger name.
The returning Nick Diaz should be making his way back into the Ultimate Fighting Championship at any given moment, and “Wonderboy” hopes to be the fighter to welcome him back. “Anyone in the division would be an exciting fight, but a fight with Nick Diaz would be an all out stand-up war,” Thompson told Champions.CO. “Nick Diaz always brings two things — an attitude and a willingness to just throw down and fight. He’s not the type of guy that looks for a takedown and you know it would just be a case of us battling it out on the feet. That would be a fun fight, that would be a very fun fight to come back to.”
