Cutting weight in mixed martial arts is one of the biggest issues with the sport, and the commissions are doing everything in their power to fix this issue. Ultimate Fighting Championship worked with the commissions to fix the issue of extreme weight-cutting as well, but some fighters still follow through with it despite the rule changes.
UFC ruffled the feathers of some fighters when they barred the use of IVs as a method of rehydration after weigh-ins, forcing fighters to take a healthier approach to cut weight. In order to give the fighters more time to rehydrate, they also made the weigh-in cut-off time earlier.
Fighters who had to cut a drastic amount of weight switched their divisions as a result of these rule changes just so they did not enter the octagon dehydrated and unhealthy. Still, some fighters find a way to stick with their weight class on fight day.
UFC’s Eddie Wineland will be stepping into the octagon this Saturday at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee when he throws down with former title challenger John Dodson. Wineland posted the following picture which looks quite disturbing considering how some fighters cut upwards of twenty pounds to make weight:
