On Saturday, one of the biggest boxing events of the year will take place as Canelo Alvarez fights Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
One of the major questions asked going into the fight is whether or not Chavez Jr. will be able to weigh-in on the catchweight limit of 164.5 pounds. Chavez Jr. has not fought at this low of a weight in over five years.
To make sure both fighters make the catchweight limit, both fighters contracts state that either fighter will be fined $1 million for every pound they weight over the weight limit.
During a roundtable with reporters, Chavez Jr. discussed the $1 million fine. Here is what Chavez Jr. said according to Ring TV:
Chavez Jr. said that if he were to come in at 165 pounds, he would have to pay Canelo an amount of $1 million even though he’s just a ½ pound over. (Canelo later said at his round-table with reporters that he will pocket the money directly.) “One pound, one $million,” Chavez said. Chavez’s attorney, Guadalupe Valencia expanded on this, saying there is a $1 million penalty for any additional pound that he is over after 165 so if he were to come in at 165.6, he would be penalized $2 million. Chavez, who said he currently weighed around 180 pounds, shrugged his shoulders and smiled.
Alvarez vs. Chavez Jr. will take place Saturday, May 6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight will air live via HBO Pay-Per-View. Weigh-ins for the fight will take place on Friday.
