UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier has taken the nickname of former UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez.
“I’m the underground king now,” Poirier tweeted on Wednesday.
Poirier fought Alvarez earlier this month at UFC 211. Poirier rocked Alvarez and almost won the fight in the first round. However, the fight ended in a no-contest in the second round after Alvarez landed multiple illegal knees to Poirier’s head while he was on the ground.
After the knees landed, Poirier could no longer continue to fight. Since the referee believed Alvarez didn’t know he was committing a foul, the fight was ruled a no contest.
Since the fight, both fighters have agreed to fight once again. However, Poirier suffered a concussion in his fight with Alvarez and will not be able to compete until November.
Yes I did and yes I will. I'm the underground king now https://t.co/J7r6EcEsX3
