It appears UFC Bantamweight Champion Cody Garbrandt will not be defending his title in July.
Ariel Helwani, of MMA Fighting, tweeted, on Wednesday, Garbrandt defending his title against former UFC Bantamweight Champion TJ Dillashaw on July 8 is unlikely.
Garbrandt and Dillashaw coached opposite of each other on the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter. The two coaches were expected to fight each other at UFC 213.
Last week it was revealed Garbrandt was suffering from an injury and his upcoming title fight was in jeopardy. Garbrandt went to Germany this week and received stem-cell treatment in order to help the champion compete in July.
Once it was revealed the title fight may not happen, Dillashaw started campaigning for a title fight against UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson.
If Garbrandt cannot compete at UFC 213, it will be a huge loss for UFC International Fight Week. The UFC has yet to confirm the main event for UFC 213. However, UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes is scheduled to defend her title against Valentina Shevchenko at the event.
No official confirmation just yet, but it continues to look less and less likely that Garbrandt-Dillashaw happens on July 8. Stay tuned.
