The UFC returned to Stockholm, Sweden for a special Sunday edition of UFC Fight Night.
In the main event, Sweden’s own Alexander Gustafsson fought fellow former title challenger Glover Teixeira. Both light heavyweights stand on top of the UFC rankings, and the winner could be in line for a title opportunity.
Gustafsson started the fight with a spinning heel kick which missed its mark. Both fighters clinched and started throwing punches. Teixeira picked Gustafsson up and threw him to the ground, but Gustafsson quickly got back to his feet. Gustafsson landed a few strong punches including a clean uppercut. Teixeira controlled the cage but struggled to land much offense. Gustafsson accidentally poked Teixeira in the eye causing the fight to stop briefly. Once the fight continued, Gustafsson continued to land strong strikes and then quickly move away from the Brazilian. After landing a brutal shot, Gustafsson would run away from his opponent to add distance. He continued to do this for the remainder of the round.
Both fighters landed clean shots early in the second round. Whenever Teixeira would gain momentum Gustafsson would sprint away. Gustafsson later landed a vicious combination that dropped Teixeira. Gustafsson was unable to keep Teixeira on the ground. Teixeira got to his feet and began landing some hard punches, but again whenever he gained momentum, Gustafsson would add distance between the two title contenders.
The third round started with both Gustafsson and Teixeira landing blows. Gustafsson landed a combination that dropped Teixeira. Gustafsson gained top position and began throwing elbows. Teixeira eventually worked his way back to his feet. Gustafsson then managed to take Teixeira down. Teixeira again got back to a standing position. On the feet, Gustafsson continued to land at will. In the final minute, both fighters stayed close to each other and traded punches. The round ended with both fighters regaining their composure.
Teixeira controlled the cage at the start of the fourth round. Gustafsson continued to use his reach advantage to land blows from afar. Whenever Teixeira would close the distance, Gustafsson continued to sprint away. Gustafsson shot for a takedown and managed to get Teixeira’s back. Teixeira was able to turn but struggled to break Gustafsson’s grip. Gustafsson let go of the clinch and began throwing punches which allowed Teixeira to escape. Gustafsson continued to pick apart Teixeira for the remainder of the round.
Despite taking a lot of damage for four rounds, Teixeira went straight for Gustafsson to start the final round. Gustafsson landed multiple uppercuts in a row to knock out Teixeira.
