The UFC returned to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for one of the most highly anticipated fights of the year.
At UFC 212, UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway unified his title Interim UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway in the main event.
Both fighters started out hesitant, but Holloway was the first to begin throwing punches. Holloway was more active, while Aldo hunted for the perfect shot. Aldo swarmed Holloway and landed multiple brutal punches followed by a flying knee. Holloway kept his composure and managed to slow the fight down. Both fighters began throwing more volume towards the end of the round. The round ended with Holloway hitting Aldo with a spinning heel kick to the body.
Aldo started the second round with a punch to the body. Holloway struggled to land while Aldo landed combinations. Holloway began to be less active as Aldo continued to land combinations. Holloway eventually landed a clean combination of punches of his own. He went for a takedown but couldn’t get the champion to the ground. Holloway continued to land the more clean shots in the second half of the round. Aldo began to land hard punches, but Holloway continued to retaliate. The round ended with Aldo landing jabs while Holloway mocked the champion.
Holloway controlled the cage to start the middle round. Both fighters had success with their jabs and combinations. Holloway appeared to get the better of Aldo in the first half. Holloway eventually dropped Aldo with punches and gained mount. Aldo got out of the mount, but couldn’t get Holloway off of him. Holloway began throwing brutal punches. Holloway then took Aldo’s back and went for a rear-naked choke. Aldo fought the choke, but Holloway took mount again. Aldo rolled over and Holloway began throwing punches until the referee was forced to stop the fight.
