UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis shocked the world by announcing his retirement after his last fight.
On Saturday, Lewis fought Mark Hunt in the main event of a UFC Fight Night in Auckland, New Zealand.
Lewis fought Hunt for over three rounds but eventually hurt his lower back and was becoming severely fatigued. In the fourth round, Lewis had all he could handle. Hunt swarmed him with punches until the referee stepped in and stopped the fight.
“That was probably my last fight,” Lewis said during his post-fight interview. “I’m getting married next week and I don’t like putting my family through all of this.”
Lewis went on to say that this was “most likely” his last fight in the UFC. He is clearly leaving open the possibility of returning.
If Lewis does retire, he will retire as one of the top 10 heavyweight fighters in the world. Going into his fight against Hunt, he was ranked No. 6 in the official UFC heavyweight rankings.
