On Sunday, the main event of UFC’s Fight Night event in Oklahoma City ended in controversy.
In a pivotal fight in the lightweight division, Michael Chiesa fought Kevin Lee.
In the first round, Lee managed to get Chiesa to the ground and secured his back. Lee then locked in a rear-naked choke. Without Chiesa tapping out, referee Mario Yamasaki stepped in and stopped the fight. Thus awarding Lee with a submission win.
While Chiesa, any most of the people watching the fight, were upset about the stoppage, Lee thinks the referee made a good call.
“The fans can say what they want but the video don’t lie, he goes limp,” Lee wrote on his Instagram page. “This was a very experienced ref who saw right away. He stopped fighting, if he hadn’t stopped it he would’ve been choked for another 45 seconds anyway. Clean af. I was able to do whatever I wanted while he lasted.”
